7th grade Poetry Unit Sick is a poem by Shel Silversten, which I chose because it's a fairly low entry into poetry. It's funny! The theme is one many students can relate too. Also, Shel Silverstein is well known for his rhyming couplets, a poetic device that eventually I will want my students to be familiar with. This is a great segue into our culminating project of reading a poem out loud. I want my students to be able to hear and feel the difference when they read a poem on the page, or hear it.
