ESSENTIAL QUESTION MY STUDENTS NEED TO ASK WHEN CONSIDERING A POEM:
WHAT DO YOU SEE? WHAT DO YOU HEAR? HOW COULD YOU PORTRAY THIS USING VISUALS? HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL WHEN YOU HEAR IT HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL WHEN YOU SEE IT PORTRAYED IN IMAGES? |
I'm crafting a poetry unit which focuses on exploring poetry through four different styles of form. We will look at haiku, sonnet, ballad, and free verse/spoken word as our examples. I am interested in the intersection of learning that happens during listening, and reading a poem.
I had the honor of seeing Sarah Kay perform at a conference years ago, and have followed her path ever since. I will be making a short video recording of me performing her poem, If I Should Have a Daughter. I can't ask my students to perform (which will be the culminating project of this unit), if I am unwilling to do so myself! Since imagery is such a key component of the craft of poetry, making a video is a great way to reinforce that learning! I can't wait to have my students get into this. |
